2007 PROJECTS AND EVENTS

April 20, 2007

After a wonderful inaugural year helping the community of Plaquemines Parish in Louisiana to start the rebuild of their lives post hurricane Katrina, the S.O.C.F. has decided in its second year to concentrate on projects closer to home.

     To echo our mission statement:
“To share the wealth of Calabasas’ resources and to enhance our community’s sense of pride through its willingness to help those in need, without prejudice, discrimination or by seeking favor or commercial gain.

We are delighted to announce two very different events, both projects honor local charities started by extraordinary Calabasas students.

The May 20, 2007 event, A super-sized baby shower brunch in support of Love and Care Help the Babies, founded in 1998 by Sara Wolfson, a sophomore at Viewpoint School. Attendees will pay a fee to attend and purchase pre-packaged baby baskets complete with all the necessities to take a new baby home from the hospital, or they can arrive with packages they have lovingly prepared themselves.  The baskets will be donated to young mothers, who are not able to purchase these items on their own, at the Center for the Vulnerable Child at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, www.loveandcareandhelpthebabies.com

In late November, the S.O.C.F. plans to host an evening event in support of Teens Against Domestic Violence, a charity founded in 2006 by several Calabasas High School freshman. This group provides holiday gifts and essentials including toiletries, books and toys to women and their children living in two local domestic violence shelters. More information on this exciting event will be mailed to you soon.

There is something quite extraordinary about the youth of today. Their ability to think beyond themselves and reach out to those less fortunate than themselves is why the S.O.C.F. wanted to recognize and support these two outstanding homegrown charities, so please join us as we salute them while giving to those in need.
Thank you.

Spirit of Calabasas Foundation Announces Plans For 2007

Calabasas, CA, March 13, 2007… The Spirit of Calabasas Foundation (S.O.C.F.) has announced its support of two local charities, both started by Calabasas students, for the remainder of 2007.  The S.O.C.F. will work closely with Love and Care and Help the Babies and Teens Against Domestic Violence to plan and host two fundraising events this year, each honoring one of the charities.

The spring event will be held on Sunday, May 20, 2007, at 11 am, at the Calabasas Tennis and Swim Center.  It will be a super-sized baby shower brunch in support of Love and Care and Help the Babies, founded by Sara Wolfson, a sophomore at Viewpoint.  Attendees will pay a fee to attend and will also have the opportunity to purchase pre-packaged baby essentials baskets complete with all the necessities to take a new baby home from the hospital.  The baskets will be donated to young mothers who are not able to purchase these items on their own, at the Center for the Vulnerable Child at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center.  www.loveandcareandhelpthebabies.com

In late November, the S.O.C.F.’s plans include an evening event in support of Teens Against Domestic Violence, a charity founded last year by several Calabasas High School freshmen.  This group provides holiday gifts and essentials including toiletries, books and toys to women and their children living in two local domestic violence shelters.  In 2006, Teens Against Domestic Violence sponsored over 30 families during the Christmas season and was chosen as the recipient of the Calabasas Barnes & Noble book drive and the Westfield Mall toy drive.

“There is something quite extraordinary about the youth of today.  Their ability to think beyond themselves and reach out to those less fortunate than themselves is why the S.O.C.F. wanted to recognize and support these two outstanding homegrown charities,” said Red Godfrey, President, Spirit of Calabasas Foundation.

Founded in 2005 by Godfrey, a Calabasas resident, in response to the devastation left in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the S.O.C.F. is a community-based volunteer group dedicated to raising awareness and funds for those in need, both near and far.
